The Scarborough sailor taking part in the Golden Globe round-the-world Sailing Race later in the year will be at a special launch event for the challenge at Scarborough Harbour today.
Guy Waites will be taking part in the Golden Globe round-the-world Sailing Race which starts in September.
Guy says he'll be giving a talk at today's launch event is taking place at Scarborough Harbour from midday.
The yacht club have organised the event as away for the town to get behind local Skipper, Guy Waites.
Guy says his boat, the Sagamartha, will be in Scarborough for the event today before heading off for more pre-race renovation.
Competitors in the sailing race will sail single handedly throughout the 5000 mile race, and what's more they will be using navigation equipment dating from the time of the first race in 1968.
Guy says it most definitely a challenge.
Guy's efforts to get Sagamartha ready for the race in September has been an epic journey, but he says he's had lots of local support.
The plan for today's activity includes:
1200 – 1300 – MV Southern Star Welcome talk by Guy Waites
1300 – 1600 – Sail signing in marquee or committee room depending on weather
1330 – 1530 - Meet Guy onboard Sagarmatha
1630 – 1800 – Sponsors reception onboard Regal Lady with Guy
