Scarborough Councillor Rich Maw is concerned that a new plan for tourism in North Yorkshire doesn’t put enough focus on events.
The newly adopted ten-year Destination Management Plan for North Yorkshire (2024-2034) aims to bolster the region's visitor economy, already valued at £4 billion and supporting 38,500 jobs. However, despite recognising the role of events in attracting tourists, concerns have been raised during council discussions that the plan doesn't adequately address the need for increased events funding.
Councillor Rich Maw, representing Scarborough, highlighted the significance of events for tourism, citing a stakeholder survey where 50% of respondents felt there weren't enough events and festivals in some parts of North Yorkshire. He pointed to the upcoming 250th anniversary of Scarborough as a tourist resort in 2026, an event requiring significant funding for a year-long program and a lasting legacy project.
Councillor Maw emphasized the need for increased financial support, particularly in light of the report's findings that a lack of advertising is a major barrier to tourism. He drew attention to the limited staff resources dedicated to event management, suggesting that this must be addressed if the region wishes to expand its events offerings.
While acknowledging the importance of seaside tourism the executive member for Business – Councillor Mark Crane - underlined that events contribute significantly to the visitor economy across North Yorkshire. He pointed to the council's support for events in Scarborough, Whitby, and the Craven area, which resulted in increased visitor numbers. He stressed that these initiatives were funded through various council channels, not solely through the Destination Management Plan. The council leader also emphasized the council's commitment to promoting North Yorkshire through its communications team and collaborations with other regional councils.
