Is anything being done about illegal e-bikes?
That's a question for North Yorkshire's Deputy Mayor for Police, Fire and Crime.
Jo Coles gave this response:
"In short, yes, there is. There have been a number of operations that the police have been undertaking following the kind of escalation around E-bikes, and I believe that a number have already now been seized as part of that process. There is a specific operation underway around e-bikes in the city, but there are also new measures in the crime and policing bill, which will enable the police to seize those.
"Bikes that have been used illegally, and that will, I think, include vehicles that are being used on private property in rural communities. If there's illegal trespassing on in rural areas, I think that will also be covered by the crime and policing Bill."
She added:
" That was one of the reasons I just suggested that it might be something that it's worth us coming back to because it is something that I think there are new measures coming that will enable us to pick up on those things in a bit more detail going forward. But yes, it is absolutely something I'm very alive to.
"Particularly in York, but it's not just in York. I think these are problems in other parts of the patch as well, and it also points to the importance of reporting and making sure that any trends that are developing in any part of the region that we're picking up on them early so that the police have the intelligence to respond appropriately."
