Whitby WI are asking North Yorkshire Council to support their campaign to improve the quality of the river Esk to bathing water standards.
Llyn Walker is the President of Whitby WI and she says that it's all about protecting the health of the local people.
North Yorkshire Council responded to the ongoing water concerns:
"The Council is alert to the concerns raised within your question. Our last meeting of this committee on the 9th of June 2023 invited the Environmental Agency to discuss these issues at the in depth. Also in December, the committee will meet again. With representatives from Yorkshire Water. As part of our ongoing role in monitoring the situation, minutes from these meetings are available online for the public to review should they wish to observe the progress being made. We continue to cooperate with all stakeholders involved in resolving these shared concerns."
Llyn says that the poor quality of bathing water could impact the town as a whole.
Llyn also said that they have had support from the Whitby Beach sweep.
