New Whitby Wayfinding Signs Could be Installed Before the Summer

Whitby is to get a new set of way-finding signs.

£147,000 will be spent on the signs which will provide maps of the town and show the time needed to get to key locations.

The signs will also include gothic inspired artwork from local artist, Karen Ruffles.

The Borough Council's portfolio holder for Quality of Life - Jim Grieve - says the signs will make things easier for visitors.

The cost of the project, £147,815.30, will be met from the £17.1 million awarded to Whitby from the Towns Fund once the funding has been received from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. It's hope the sign will be in place for the summer season.

Borough Council Head of Tourism - Janet Deacon - says the signs will also have some unique Whitby artwork from Whitby-based artist Karen Ruffles.

Janet says that a new app is also planned to support the physical signs. It will provide a digital visitor information map and direct people to attractions, walks and trails around the town alongside augmented reality games for families to enjoy.

Following a full tendering process, DMA Signs Limited has been chosen to create the new structures.
