North Yorkshire's next Chief Constable will lead a drive for neighbourhood policing.
Tim Forber will take over the role when the current chief retires at the end of March.
Mr Forber is currently deputy Chief in South Yorkshire.
He says neighbourhood policing will be key to his approach.
The new Chief says a focus on neighbourhood policing can help reduce other pressures on the police force.
Tim Forber, who is presently serving as Deputy Chief Constable at South Yorkshire Police, was announced as the preferred candidate for Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police by Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Zoë Metcalfe, following a robust recruitment process in December 2023. His appointment was confirmed at a meeting of North Yorkshire;s Police, Fire and Crime panel last week.
Commissioner Zoë Metcalfe said:
“I am delighted that the Police, Fire and Crime Panel have endorsed my recommendation for Tim to be appointed as North Yorkshire Police’s Chief Constable.
“During the interview process he demonstrated his depth of experience and commitment to collaboration and local neighbourhood policing across rural and urban areas.
“I have every confidence he has the right qualities to drive forward North Yorkshire Police to be an outstanding service and to keep people safe and feeling safe.”
Tim Forber said:
“I am hugely honoured to be appointed Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police. I am looking forward to working tirelessly on behalf of the communities of York and North Yorkshire to ensure they have an outstanding police service.”
Mr Forber says he has a clear vision for the force.
Mr Forber said his biggest challenge in York and North Yorkshire will be to tackle a lack of confidence in officers and added the force is “knackered” if the public has lost faith in them.
He said:
“There’s certain events that have rocked confidence in policing and it’s wrong to suggest they’ve been limited to London because they’re not. Any police force thats not aligned to some of the integrity issues that have undermined confidence in policing will fail very quickly.
“I’m extremely proud to be a British police officer. It saddens me that givens all effort colleagues put in, the actions of a relatively small minority can undermine policing.”
