New Mayor for Scarborough Borough

Cllr Eric Broadbent has been formally elected as Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough for the 2021 to 2022 mayoral year.

He took over from Cllr Hazel Lynskey who has been the Mayor since May 2019 after her mayoral term was extended due to the pandemic.

At the same meeting, which was held in the Grand Hall at Scarborough Spa to allow space for adequate social distancing, Cllr Roxanne Murphy was elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough.

It marks the second time Cllr Broadbent has taken up the mayoral office, having previously held the role from 2004 to 2005.

Eric was elected to the council in 1991 and has clocked up twenty nine years’ service as a borough councillor. He was elected onto North Yorkshire County Council in 2001 and was most recently re-elected in 2017.

Eric spent most of his working life at Plaxtons Coach Builders in Scarborough, taking early retirement in 2000. His hobbies include gardening, travelling and cooking.

Eric is married to Lynne who is his Mayoress for the year, and the couple have three grown up children.

Cllr Eric Broadbent, Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, said:

“I am deeply honoured to become Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough for the second time. The Mayoress and I will work hard to promote our beautiful borough and give reassurance to all our residents during these challenging times.

“Our theme for our civic year will be working together with all carers in our borough’s communities and we look forward to meeting many people within local communities through our work.”

The Deputy Mayor was born and raised in Scarborough, the eldest of two children to Honorary Alderman Norman Murphy and current councillor, Cllr Eileen Murphy. Roxanne is also a mother herself to four year old daughter, Eliza.

She has been a borough councillor for ten years, during which time she has served on various committees and chaired the licensing committee for the past two years.

She works as an operations manager for a leading local hospitality company and is passionate about hospitality and tourism, particularly nurturing young people to progress within the industry

Cllr Roxanne Murphy, Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough said:

“I am delighted to have been appointed as Deputy Mayor, in a year that has been more than a challenge for most.

“It will be an honour to celebrate and recognise some of the great achievements within the borough during the next year and to support Cllr Broadbent in his role as Mayor.”
