Train Services Suspended As Large Crop Fire Blocks Railway Line Near Filey

Rail services between Bridlington and Scarborough are suspended until at least 9:30 pm due to a large crop fire burning next to the tracks in Filey.

Rail passengers travelling along the Yorkshire Coast face severe disruption and cancelled services this evening as a large crop fire burns next to the railway line in Filey.

Train services operating between Bridlington and Scarborough are completely suspended, with disruption expected to continue until at least 9:30 pm tonight.

Rail officials confirmed that services originating from Sheffield and destined for Scarborough will now be revised to terminate early at Bridlington.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service officials stated they were called to the major blaze on Bridlington Road in Filey at 4:19 pm.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service detailed the scale of the emergency response.

They said:

We currently have several crews in attendance at a fire involving standing crops in a field off Bridlington Road, Hunmanby, near Filey.

The fire covers approximately 20 acres. Firefighters are working alongside local farmers using water bowsers to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

Please avoid the area and keep roads clear to allow emergency vehicles access.

The proximity of the blaze to the railway infrastructure prompted an immediate halt to train movements in the area.

National Rail representatives reported the track closure at 5:16 pm, confirming that the line is entirely blocked.

A spokesperson for National Rail outlined the situation facing commuters.

They said:

"There is a fire next to the track between Bridlington and Scarborough meaning that the line is blocked. As a result, trains are unable to operate between these stations. Trains running between Sheffield and Scarborough will be revised to run between Sheffield and Bridlington only."

Rail officials assured passengers that Northern services running between York, Hull, and Bridlington are not affected by the track closure.

Road transport has been requested by rail operators in case the disruption continues into the night.

National Rail officials warned that journey times may be significantly extended for those travelling by road transport, and that replacement vehicles may be busier than usual.

A spokesperson for the rail network issued advice regarding replacement vehicles.

They said:

"Please check station information posters for the location of the bus pick up points and be advised that bicycles, e-bikes and dogs (except for service dogs) are not permitted on replacement road transport."

Passengers are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys while the incident is dealt with.
