Firefighters from across the region have taken part in a major training exercise simulating a school fire with missing casualties at the former Eskdale School site in Whitby.
Cross-border rescue procedures have been put to the test during a simulated school blaze in Whitby.
Around thirty people took part in the major training exercise at the former Eskdale School site on Tuesday, which involved reports of casualties missing inside the building.
The operation was designed to create a highly realistic emergency scenario, with five volunteers stepping in to assist responding crews.
During the operation, five breathing apparatus crews were deployed into the simulated environment to locate and extract the missing individuals.
Firefighters utilised specialised escape smoke hoods to assist in the safe evacuation of the casualties.
According to the fire service, these hoods provide individuals with ten minutes of crucial protection when navigating through smoke-filled environments.
Officials stated that this equipment gives firefighters vital time to carry out rescues safely during complex operations.
The simulated emergency also served as a critical test for cross-border cooperation between neighbouring stations.
Crews from Whitby, Goathland, Danby, and Lythe worked alongside colleagues from Loftus to tackle the simulated incident.
A spokesperson for the fire service highlighted the importance of the drill.
"Exercises like this help ensure crews are ready to respond effectively when needed. A fantastic opportunity to practise vital skills, work closely with partners, and ensure firefighters remain prepared for any challenge."
The fire service issued thanks to North Yorkshire Council and the site's security company for accommodating the extensive training drill.
Cleveland Fire Brigade was also commended for releasing the Loftus crew to take part in the collaborative exercise.
Organisers of the event received special recognition for their efforts in coordinating the realistic scenario.
The fire service spokesperson added:
"Special thanks also go to Watch Manager Tindall and Crew Manager Potts from Whitby red watch for organising the exercise, and to everyone who gave their time to support it."
