A New festival celebrating innovation and entrepreneurship in Whitby will launch this summer.
The "Made In Whitby Festival" aims to showcase local businesses which use the town’s produce, resources, and skills.
It will take place in July at Whitby Brewery on East Cliff and will feature two days of businesses hosting stalls, talks and live demonstrations, alongside performances from Whitby musicians.
Darren Archibald, from Whitby Sea Salt, is one of the founders of the festival. He hope the festival will have a long lasting impact.
Small businesses accounting for over 95 per cent of the business population in the area and play an essential part in keeping the business and visitor economy afloat.
The organisers hope the Made in Whitby Festival will be able to both celebrate the town’s contribution to a sustainable and growing economy and showcase many local firms.
Darren Archibald hopes the event will demonstrate that there is more to Whitby than just tourism.
The event is sponsored by Anglo American, owner of the Woodsmith polyhalite mine just south of Whitby. Alongside their operations, Anglo American aims to support economic growth and connect local people to opportunities.
Vicky Bolton, Social Programmes Manager at Anglo American, said:
“Anglo American is committed to supporting local economic growth in the areas around our operations.
“Whitby is full of great businesses making fantastic products and we’re keen to help promote what the town has to offer to both residents and visitors.”
The Made in Whitby Festival takes place on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th July 2023 from 11am each day.
Whitby Brewery will be hosting the event with activities both inside and outdoors.
Visitors to the festival can expect to see an array of local Whitby businesses, using all that the coastal town has to offer including sea salt, hops and, of course, jet.
