National maritime charity, the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, has announced a new Household Appliance Fund.
The new fund aims to improve access to essential appliances for those working within the UK’s fishing and merchant marine industries.and to help transform lives across coastal communities.
Developed on the back of research conducted by charity Turn2Us – which indicates that up to 4.8 million individuals in the UK are living without at least one essential household appliance – the new funding initiative emerges as much needed financial support for those who work at sea.
Further investigation by the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, in association with the Fishermen’s Mission and Sailors’ Children’s Society, has shown this to be a significant issue within the fishing and maritime communities.
Captain Justin Osmond RN, Chief Executive of the Society said:
“Our new Household Appliance Fund reflects our continued dedication to enhancing the living conditions of those who work at sea. By removing financial barriers to essential appliances for seafarers and their families, we can significantly improve their daily lives.
“The fishing and maritime communities we serve are proud, extremely self-reliant and often find it hard to ask for help when times are difficult, but our message is simple – we understand the challenges you are facing and will help wherever we can.” Osmond continued, “I am sure this fund can help make a real difference and I’m eager to see its positive impact.”
Initially the fund has been allocated £30,000 to provide grants for up to 100 low-income fishers and mariners with essential appliances such as cookers, fridges, freezers and washing machines.
In a significant shift from the Society’s regular grant-making process, no income or savings assessment will be required. Grants from the Fund will target working fishers and mariners currently receiving Universal Credit or similar benefits, ensuring they received critical support without the burden of a financial assessment.
For over 180 years the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has supported seafarers and their families across the UK who are suffering hardship and distress. The charity continues to provide help in over 2,000 cases of need each year by offering financial and practical support.
