The facility at East Whitby Academy will deliver outdoor education to hundreds of pupils from schools across the North of England.
The Enquire learning trust have created a custom built 36 bed field study centre in Whitby with the hopes of bringing high quality outdoor education to children from across the trust.
The aim is that every child who attends an Enquire learning trust school will get an all expenses paid trip to Whitby during their primary school lives and will experience all the amazing things Whitby and the surrounding area has to offer.
Megan Suggitt is Vice Principal at East Whitby Academy, she explains what they have built at the school.
The Strenshaw Field Study Centre will initially be used by schools from across the Enquire Learning Trust, it's a family of 32 primary academies which operates schools in Middlesbrough, Manchester and Lincolnshire as well as both East Whitby Academy and Stakesby Primary in Whitby.
Megan says the trust were keen to locate the centre in Whitby.
The trust say that the new centre is a relatively unique venture as most residential trips are provided by external providers whereas the new centre will provide an 'in-house' facility for its schools.
The centre will be using local businesses to enhance the trips the children have including local chip shops, local ghost walks and boat trip.
Many of the trusts schools are in relatively deprived areas and the hope is that visiting the new centre in Whitby will give them an opportunity to experience things they may not otherwise get chance to.
Pupils from schools across the multi-academy trust will visit the centre for two or three night stays, Megan says it will be staffed locally with support from the visiting schools.
Megan says the visiting pupils will take part in a range of activities which will be tied to their classroom learning.
Tiffany Rollins is Deputy manager at the Field Study Centre, she says the new buildings will provide the visiting students with some amazing facilities.
As well as providing outdoor education for schools from across the north Megan says the two local schools will also be able to use the new facility.
Megan says the pupils and parents at East Whitby Academy have been very understanding while the construction work for the new centre has been taking place.
Tiff says there has been great support form local companies and organisations who have provided extra resources for the centre.
The official opening of the centre will take place today ahead of the first set of visiting students arriving next week. Megan says they a number of people taking part in today's opening event including Yorkshire Cricketer Adam Lythe.
The official opening is happening at 11am, the centre will receive it's first visiting pupils next week.
