A new blood bike is being bought into service on the Yorkshire Coast funded by local bikers.
The bike will be operated by the White Knights Yorkshire Blood Bike charity - they're a team of specially trained volunteers who help the NHS by transporting urgent medical supplies around the county.
The new bike has been made possible after fundraising by the Widows Sons Masonic Lodge 1011 who have members in Scarborough and Pocklington.
Matthew Beynon-Tullett from the White Knights says it's a welcome addition to their fleet.
Matthew says the high spec motorbike has been funded by local masonic groups.
Members of the Widows Sons Masonic Lodge and the Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Association were instrumental in raising £21k to provide the voluntary Blood Bike service with a new bike for North Yorkshire.
Andy Hunn of the Widows Sons Masonic Lodge said:
“We’re very proud to have purchased a new Blood Bike which will operate in the areas covered by York and Scarborough NHS Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trusts. Whiteknights Volunteer Blood Bikers provide a marvellous service totally free of charge to hospitals and hospices in our region.
They have been so busy during the Pandemic, having ridden thousands of miles, that the Blood Bike for our area needed replacing. We raised £1000 in our local group then achieved further funding through other Masonic charitable foundations including the Freemasons Charity Foundation of Yorkshire North and East Riding.”
The Blood Bike service has been running for a number of years, Matthew Beynon-Tullett says it aims to plug a gap in NHS transport services.
The new high spec bike will be bought into service in the next few weeks, Matthew says the bike is built to a custom spec.
