The Tea Pot café in Scarborough has submitted plans to build a new first-floor bar and terrace at its East Pier location, potentially creating eight new jobs.
A popular café has lodged plans to build a new first-floor pub in a North Yorkshire resort’s conservation area which would create new jobs.
The Tea Pot café in Scarborough wants to build a first-floor bar serving alcoholic drinks, teas, coffees, and cold platters at its East Pier harbourside location.
A terrace with a seating area would also be created, allowing customers to enjoy Sandside’s vibrant atmosphere.
If the scheme goes ahead, the business would increase the number of staff from 15 to 23, according to applicants Marvin and Julie Smith.
There would be no increase to the footprint of the building and only a “small increase in height”.
“The proposed works will not be to the main structure of the Tea Pot, and therefore limited works to the setting of the conservation area in Sandside,” the plans state.
An application to North Yorkshire Council adds:
“The proposed works will not impact negatively on the existing street scene and so is considered to conserve its setting and significance as well as the significance of nearby Toll House, which was built in 1900.
“The resulting impacts are very minor changes to the wider setting, which will not be considered negligible.”
The applicants’ family has run The Tea Pot at East Pier for the last 40 years and is currently in the tenure of Marvin and Julie Smith, the agent for the application said.
Mr and Mrs Smith stated that approving the application would benefit them “in respect of a positive addition to a substantial family business”.
“The proposal is considered to conserve the setting of the conservation area, cultural heritage and values,” the scheme states.
The local planning authority has not set a date for deciding on the application which is open to representations from members of the public.
