The chair of the board responsible for allocating £20m of funding in Scarborough says it's for the town to decide how to spend it.
Scarborough's twenty million pounds of "Pride in Place" Funding is for local people to spend not the councils.
That's the message from the chair of the new Scarborough Neighbourhood Board responsible for spending the cash.
Heath Samples says the money has a clear purpose.
"The more you look into the actual project itself, the more you realize there's a real clear distinction. It's almost like San Andrea's fault, you know, California, one side, Nevada on the other.
You can see that, you know, the council have got their spending and their commitments on one side, and the Pride in Place program has got their Opportunities and spending for the, for the residents on the other. So actually it's quite clear cut.
If any North Yorkshire councillors or Scarborough councillors are listening, I'm sorry to really disappoint you, but we aren't here to fulfil your budgets.
This is money for the Scarborough residents. "
Eleven projects in Scarborough have been short-listed to potentially receive a share of the town's twenty million pound "Pride in Place" funding.
How it will ultimately be spent will be decided by the Neighbourhood Board.
Heath Samples says they are asking local residents and organizations to help with the decision through a new consultation.
"What we're doing now is going through the process of approaching all the groups in Scarborough that have engaged with us over the last two years and saying, look, we're narrowing down these projects that you told us were important to you.
We are gonna be starting to, move money into these themes. Can you just sanitize them, double check they're still a priority for yourselves, and then that money will then get allocated toward that.
The board is now seeking residents, businesses and visitors to have their say on each project as part of a five-week consultation.
The projects are:
- The Old Town Regeneration project,
- The redevelopment of Square One (SQ1),
- Sprucing Up Scarborough,
- We Are Scarborough Volunteering Hub,
- The Scarborough Fair,
- Turning Tides,
- Dads Behaving Madly Wellbeing Hub,
- Scarborough Youth Spaces Network,
- Stephen Joseph Theatre improvements,
- Scarborough Watersports and Sea Centre,
- The Scarborough Community Grant Fund.
The consultation runs until 5pm on Friday, February 13.
People can take part in the consultation by visiting North Yorkshire Council’s website at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/pride-in-place
A number of events will also be held in the town over the next month where communities can take part in the consultation and ask any questions they have. More information on these events, as well as each of the identified projects, are also available on the website.
