Whitby man David Tindale has always liked musicals, particularly the old-fashioned ones.
Now David is living up at Danby and has made it his mission to put on musical theatre in the Esk Valley in the newly improved Danby Village Hall.
Some years ago he helped the famous Whitby stage director David Richardson put on musicals in Goathland - shows like ‘Oliver’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ - which filled the village hall for five nights and were much enjoyed by the cast and the audiences.
He told This Is The Coast:
“Those kinds of shows have got some great tunes from people like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin and they’re all so optimistic and have stories that are easy to enjoy.
“Dave Rich used lots of locals in the cast but also pulled in some of the actors he knew in Whitby like Ken Butler who played a memory Bill Sykes in Oliver.
“It’s a great venue, a little bigger than Goathland, but still with that local village feel that makes the audiences very much on your side.
”We’re putting on Annie Get Your Gun next Easter and we’re holding an open-meeting for potential cast and crew on this Sunday coming, November 23rd at 4pm in the Danby Village Hall. Everyone is welcome to come along and meet our great director Robert Smith, our producer Ann Bowes, and me as Musical Director.
“The title of the song says it all, there really is nothing as much fun as being in a rip-roaring musical and Rob and I intend to have as much fun as possible with the cast and the audiences. If people can come along on Sunday we can tell them all about it.
"We’re looking for wannabe actors, singers and dancers for the show, as well as back-stage. We’ll take all ages and people that are excellent as well as people that are enthusiastic!”
Annie Get Your Gun was originally a highly successful Broadway show, and was then made into two memorable MGM technicolor feature films. It features songs by Irving Berlin like “No Business Like Show Business”.
