More Call Handlers Needed for North Yorkshire 999 and 101 Service

Online crime reporting systems have been introduced to reduce pressure on the 101 and 999 phone lines but the force says more call handlers are still needed.

The introduction of online reporting of crime in North Yorkshire has had an unexpected consequence.

The North Yorkshire force say that has worked, but they've also seen some people reporting incidents online who wouldn't have done so by phone.

Superintendent Jason Dixon says says online reporting isn't ever going to replace the phone lines completely.

The force says despite the introduction of the online reporting tools it still needs more call handlers to help reduce call answer times on the 999 and 101 phone lines.

A study is to be carried out to identify how many call handlers are needed and when they should be deployed.

Superintendent Dixon says the introduction on online crime reporting has helped but isn't the full answer.
