Modernisation Plan for Whitby Railway Line Needs Revisiting

The Esk Valley Rail Partnership say they have concerns about the plans for signal upgrades on the line between Whitby and Middlesbrough.

Seven million pounds was allocated to upgrade schemes back in 2015 but has not yet been spent, the plan proposed at the time to improve the reliability of the line involved introducing a new token section on the single track line.

Alan Williams from the rail partnership says that method of controlling track access for trains is antiquated and should be reconsidered.

Some of the money allocated to the scheme would be given to the train operator to provide extra services on the line but around half the cash would be used for improvements to the line itself.

Alan says the plans drawn up at the time don't make use of the most recent technological developments.
