Mayor Approves Donation Of Two Fire Engines To Ukraine

Two decommissioned fire engines from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are to be donated to Ukraine following approval from Mayor David Skaith.

Mayor David Skaith has officially approved the donation of two decommissioned fire engines from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to support ongoing humanitarian and emergency efforts in Ukraine.

The initiative to assist the war-torn nation is being carefully coordinated through the charity FIRE AID. The organisation operates as a dedicated humanitarian network, actively supporting fire and rescue services worldwide by providing essential equipment and vehicles.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022, FIRE AID, working alongside its various partners, has successfully facilitated the donation of over one hundred fire and rescue vehicles to Ukraine.

Although the two fire engines currently being donated have reached the end of their operational life within the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, officials have confirmed that they remain fully functional. It is stated that the vehicles will go on to provide highly valuable support to Ukrainian firefighters and local communities who are operating under incredibly difficult circumstances.

In order to reach their destination, the two fire engines will be transported across Europe to Ukraine via Poland. The long journey is being made possible and supported by volunteer drivers from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, who have stepped forward to deliver the vehicles in their own time.

This significant donation from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service builds upon a history of support for Ukraine. It follows previous vital contributions, which included a supply of breathing apparatus equipment sent earlier in 2025, as well as a further fire engine that was provided to the country in 2023.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:

"These fire engines have served our communities well and now they can go on to serve the brave people of Ukraine. Our emergency services consistently step up, and I'm proud of the volunteers who are giving up their time to drive these vehicles across Europe. This donation is a testament to the community spirit that defines our county and proves that when we come together, we can make a difference for those who need it."

Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime, said:

"The donation of these fire engines means equipment no longer in use here can make a real difference on the frontline of the war in Ukraine. Alongside the Mayor, I’m extremely proud that North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service continues to support the UK's vital efforts to help save lives and protect communities."
