Over 60 percent of workers at Whitby's Woodsmith mine are local people according to the latest figures.
Mining company Anglo American says that over 60 percent of the workforce on it's Woodsmith Mine project near Whitby are now from the local area.
That's according to the latest figures from the mine owner.
In an update to Whitby Town Council Heather King from the company says their local employment rate is higher than they expected.
The project currently employs over 1,650 people at its sites in Whitby, Teesside and Scarborough.
The company classes local workers as those who live within an hours drive of the facility.
In the update to Whitby Town Council the company said it had originally expected that figure to be just 35 percent.
Town Councillor - Sandra Turner - thinks the mine is having a positive impact on the local economy.
The project is currently building two deep mine shafts over a mile deep near Sneaton, south of Whitby and a 37km-long tunnel to a processing area at Wilton on Teesside.
A recent study has also shown that the Project contributed £222million to the Yorkshire and North East economies last year and over £1.2billion since it began.
Last month the company announced that the capital expenditure for this year will be £650 million and approximately £800 million per year for the following three years.
