Last Chance to Vote for Scarborough Youth Worker in National Awards

Scarborough youth worker, James Koppert has been nominated for an award at the National Diversity awards.

James Koppert has been nominated for the Positive Role Model for Disability at The National Diversity Awards 2022 which will be held at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in September.

The prestigious event recognises nominees in their respective fields of diversity including age, disability, gender, race, faith, religion and sexual orientation.

Voting closes today (Friday 20th May) at https://www.nationaldiversityawards.co.uk/awards-2022/nominations/james-koppert

James Koppert has spent over twenty years as a youth worker for North Yorkshire County Council positively changing lives in the community.

James has ADHD, Fibromyalgia, Hyper Mobility, Chronic Fatigue and a variety of other conditions, Instead of slowing him down James says he wears these as a badge of honour, as things to be a proud part of his very being. James states they are the very best and the very worst of him.

After working with so many young people with ADHD, James says he noticed how many were failing due to the lack of understanding and training. James has been relentlessly campaigning, writing articles for national newspapers, podcasting as well as providing his own lectures and training for organisations and families.

He also wants to change the dialogue on what he views as "the most discriminated against condition". James' talks are filled with research, his own personal experiences and humour. Some have called them life changing. James presses for minor changes in language within education to young people with ADHD to prevent meltdowns. This has allowed young people to feel that the institutions are on their side, which have actively reduced exclusions and created greater participation in education.

If he wins the award in September, James says he will use the platform to increase awareness for this neurological condition. James said:

"Thank you to all that have voted. It closes this Friday so still chance to get your votes in. I'm up against celebrities and influencers who will get hundreds more votes than me so if you could spare a moment I would be very grateful. If I win this I can kick some more butt in making neurodiverse voices heard and changes made "

The UK’s largest diversity awards has attracted a growing list of supporters including Adam Hills, Graham Norton and Katie Piper. Sir Lenny Henry CBE, last year’s winner of the Celebrity of the Year gong said;

“Diversity to me means involving everybody without any discrimination; its means having integrated groups in society, it means fairness and total inclusion and that’s what the National Diversity Awards are about. Congratulations to everyone who has been nominated, you’re all doing a fantastic job, rock on!”

The National Diversity Awards receives over 60,000 nominations and votes annually.

Founder & CEO Paul Sesay said,

“As we enter our 11th awards season, The National Diversity Awards prepare to welcome a host of outstanding role models and charities to our family. We look to those who represent progress, spirit and resilience, and I cannot wait to learn about the wonderful work being carried out this year”.

Voting closes on May 20th 2022 with shortlisted nominees being announced shortly after this date.
