Hospitality owners across Scarborough and Whitby are calling for a reduction in VAT to help ease the burden of rising operating costs ahead of the upcoming budget.
Urgent calls for a reduction in Value Added Tax are emerging from the local hospitality sector as business owners seek vital financial relief ahead of the upcoming October budget.
Operating costs, employment difficulties, and the daily struggle to balance the books are currently dominating the concerns of those running venues across Scarborough and Whitby.
Cafes, restaurants, hotels, and various accommodation providers are actively seeking breathing space to cope with the relentless pressure of increasing expenses across the board.
To address these pressing issues, local employers recently gathered at Scarborough Rugby Club to share their first-hand experiences and outline the exact challenges affecting the coastal hospitality industry.
The evidence and insights gathered during this focused session will now be used to shape crucial conversations with ministers and government officials in Westminster.
Ensuring that the specific needs of the Yorkshire Coast's hospitality sector are clearly understood before any major financial decisions are finalised remains the primary goal of the consultation.
Alison Hume MP, who organised the meeting to engage directly with local employers, explained why gathering this grassroots expertise is so important for informing national policymaking.
She said:
"Hospitality businesses are such an important part of Scarborough, Whitby and the villages, which is why I wanted to hear first-hand from them.
They create jobs, support our local economy and help make this such a fantastic place to live and visit.
The message was loud and clear – the hospitality sector is asking for VAT to be reduced. It’s the only breathing space available for hard-pressed businesses juggling increasing costs across the board.
It was a really honest and constructive discussion.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who came along and shared their experiences.
Hearing directly from the people running businesses day in, day out, was invaluable and I’ll be passing on what they told me."
Alongside the strong push for tax reductions, the meeting provided a valuable forum to discuss recent measures introduced by the Labour Government aimed at supporting the struggling industry.
These national initiatives include the implementation of lower permanent business rate multipliers and the introduction of the Great British Summer Savings scheme.
Reforms specifically designed to relax regulations surrounding temporary events and outdoor seating were also high on the agenda, offering potential new avenues for local venues to maximise their trading opportunities.
Following the constructive dialogue at the rugby club, a firm commitment has been made to take the sector's feedback directly to Treasury ministers ahead of the budget announcement.
The discussions have provided invaluable insight into both the severe challenges currently facing the sector and the potential opportunities to help local businesses succeed in a difficult economic climate.
