Leading financiers have gathered in Westminster to explore four major regeneration projects designed to bring new jobs and investment to Scarborough.
Major investment and new jobs are being targeted for Scarborough following a high-profile showcase event in Westminster.
Leading financiers have been presented with four major regeneration opportunities designed to transform the town's economic future. The 'Scarborough Sparks' reception aimed to connect potential investors directly with local business leaders ahead of a planned fact-finding mission to the coast later this year.
Organised by UKREiiF, the initiative focuses on securing funding across several key sectors, including marine, advanced manufacturing, renewables, and the cultural and leisure industries.
Alison Hume, who was elected as the Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby in 2024, hosted the event at the House of Commons. She said:
"Like all of us, I’m very proud of Scarborough but I want it to be even bigger and better and that’s what Scarborough Sparks is all about.
It’s about showcasing to investors from elsewhere what it’s got to offer and letting everyone know it’s on the cusp of an exciting future to harness investment."
Four specific development propositions have been identified as catalysts for economic renewal. The ambitious 'Station to Shore' project aims to revitalise the heart of Scarborough by bringing together key high street, civic, and heritage assets. The scheme is designed to strengthen connections between the railway station and the seafront, ultimately attracting new homes and businesses.
Town centre renewal will also be driven by the 'SQ1' project, which focuses on transforming the former Brunswick Shopping Centre. Officials expect this development to increase footfall, attract new brands and leisure operators, and boost both the daytime and evening economies.
Tourism growth forms a major part of the investment pitch, with North Bay highlighted as a prime opportunity for destination development. Investment in this area is intended to extend the traditional tourism season, boost overnight stays, and increase visitor spending to support sustainable economic growth.
Commercial and industrial expansion is focused on Eastfield and the Scarborough Business Park. This site builds on the town's established strengths in engineering and food production, offering significant scope for inward investment and high-quality job creation.
Several major local employers attended the reception to share their first-hand experiences of operating and investing in the town. Representatives included global food producer McCain and specialist steel firm William Hare, a company responsible for helping to build some of London’s most iconic buildings. Also present were promoters Cuffe and Taylor, who recently staged their two-hundredth show at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre.
Public sector backing was prominent at the House of Commons, with representatives from North Yorkshire Council and the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, in attendance. Mayor Skaith has already designated Scarborough as a Mayoral Development Zone, supported by an initial eight million pound investment from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Community-led regeneration is also receiving a significant financial boost. The Government's Pride in Place initiative is injecting nearly twenty million pounds into projects chosen by local residents, running alongside the wider commercial ambitions.
Recognised as the country's first seaside resort, Scarborough is increasingly being marketed as a competitive alternative to higher-cost city locations, boasting a skilled workforce and a strong industrial base.
Speaking on the town's potential, Ms Hume added:
"There’s so many opportunities in Scarborough and so much expertise.
This is about how we maximise that now and also in the future."
