Christmas shoppers and people visiting restaurants and cafés for festive meet ups will be able to enjoy free car parking at selected times during December in Scarborough and Whitby.
Scarborough Borough Council says it is supporting the retail and hospitality sectors by suspending charges in some of its off-street car parks from 3pm on Thursday 1, 8, 15 and 22 December, and from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 4, 11 and 18 December.
In Scarborough the free parking offer applies to the following off-street car parks:
- Castle Road,
- Falconers Road,
- Friarsway,
- North Terrace,
- St Nicholas Parade,
- St Thomas Street,
- Victoria Road,
- Westwood
- William Street.
In Whitby, free parking will be available at the following car parks:
- Church Street,
- Cliff Street,
- Marina Back,
- Marina Front,
- Endeavour Wharf
- St Hilda’s Terrace
Charges will apply in all other car parks and to on-street parking.
Council owned car parks in Filey and the borough’s coastal villages are already free at this time of year.
The council is hoping that for those who cannot walk or take public transport to the town centres, the free parking will encourage them to spend their Christmas pounds locally instead of travelling further afield or paying for online deliveries.
Councillor Tony Randerson, Scarborough Borough Council cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said:
“As the cost of living crisis continues, our communities are facing another challenging year where every penny counts. This is especially true during the festive season when finances are further stretched.
“I hope our free parking offer goes some way to easing the burden on those preparing for Christmas, helps to support local businesses and provides some much needed festive cheer.”
