Flamborough RNLI volunteer crew member Karl Price completes training to become the stations latest helmsman
Local fisherman Karl has been an volunteer crew member at Flamborough RNLI for over 5 years undertook his final assessment on Tuesday evening to become helmsman of Flamborough RNLI B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat 'Elizabeth Jane Palmer'.
During his 5 years as a member of the crew Karl has undertaken extensive training training to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to fulfil the role. Training has consisted of attending courses at the RNLI college in Poole combined with station based training and assessments. Modules have included , search and rescue, navigation and casualty care. Competence at each stage was assessed when he was required to demonstrate his knowledge and practical skills as well as leadership qualities.
Flamborough Lifeboat Operations Manager David Freeman said
'The training process requires a considerable amount of commitment and hard work. During his time as volunteer crew member Karl has shown all the qualities needed as a helmsman, it's been good to watch his progress and we all wish him the best in his new role.'

Karl said
'I thoroughly enjoy the training and I am looking forward to the new role as helmsman. I also enjoy participating in the training of junior crew members and seeing individuals progress.'
The Flamborough crew were in action over the weekend. Whilst on exercise yesterday on Sunday morning Flamborough RNLI lifeboat with volunteer crew was diverted to an incident at North Landing.
A man was reported to be in difficulty in the water, having fallen out of his kayak off Robin Lythes Hole. The crew were on scene at 9:33am and safely took the casualty on board. The casualty was taken to the lifeboat station at South Landing where he was handed over to Coastguard and ambulance personnel. Flamborough lifeboat crew then retrieved the kayak before returning to station at South Landing at 10:30am.
The Flamborough RNLI Volunteer crew and shore crew then washed down, re fuelled and prepared the lifeboat and launch tractor for the next service.
