Filey is to lose it's bird aviary but the birds will be staying in the town.
The Aviary in Memorial Gardens is owned by the town council but maintained by the borough council which ceases to exist at the end of the month.
The Town council felt that it was unable to take on the daily care of the birds itself and recently asked for any local volunteers to come forwards.
Town mayor - Councillor Jacqui Houlden-Banks - says a meeting of the prospective volunteers decided the best course of action was to find the birds a new home.
The birds will be moving to Filey Bird Garden later this month while the aviary structure is going to the Whitby Wildlife Centre.
Councillor Houlden-Banks says at the meeting with the prospective volunteers, it was decided the task of looking after the birds 365 days a year was too great for a voluntary team and the public at the meeting decided that the birds should move to a new home instead.
Councillor Marilyn Anthony was at the meeting with the members of the public who had been interested in helping look after the birds, Councillor Anthony says that although she was keen for the aviary to stay, the meeting came to the right conclusion.
The Town Council says the plan now is for the birds to move to their new home at Filey Bird Garden in the coming weeks with the actual aviary structure being moved to it's new home at Whitby Wildlife Centre. There are now firm plans yet for the area in Memorial Gardens where the aviary currently stands, but one suggestion is that it could become a wildlife garden.
Filey Bird Garden reopens on April 1st.
