Two East Riding teams scooped top awards at this year’s prestigious national Highways Awards.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s winter services team – which treats the area’s roads each year in the cold season – won the award for Winter Service and Climate Resilience of the Year.
And the council’s Live Labs project, aimed at cutting carbon in street lighting on roads, won the Environmental Sustainability Award.
The annual Highways Awards celebrate the outstanding teams, projects and individuals who have made significant contributions to the UK’s highways industry over the past year.
The winter team, dedicated to reducing the risks of ice and snow on the region’s roads, won the award for transforming its operations in response to the changing climate. By improving efficiency and evolving into a year-round service, the team is playing a vital role in strengthening resilience and safeguarding communities.
It was up against six other impressive entries, including projects from Transport For London and National Highways.
The Live Labs project, which is leading the way as part of a national pilot project to save energy and cut carbon emissions along UK roads, won against 13 other entries from across the country.
The project was also highly commended in both the Highways Partnership of the Year and Team of the Year categories.
The project is currently running year-long trials where street lights have been turned off along stretches on two of the area’s busiest main roads, the A164 and the A1079, while at the same time highly reflective white lines and solar powered road studs have been installed.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said:
“To be named national champions in two categories of such prestigious awards like this is fantastic.
“Congratulations to both of our teams. This is testament to the impressive and innovative work they are doing to improve the area’s roads.
“They have put East Riding of Yorkshire Council firmly on the map for national excellence.”
The Highways Awards is run annually by Highways Magazine.
