East Riding councillors are encouraging residents to use free Boditrax body composition scanners available at local libraries and leisure centres to improve their health and well-being.
Councillor Jayne Phoenix has led a council motion to increase public awareness of Boditrax body composition scanners at East Riding Leisure centres.
These medically approved machines are designed to provide detailed insights into bone mass, visceral fat, and metabolic age in just a matter of seconds, offering users a comprehensive overview of their physical well-being.
Councillor Phoenix said:
"It is a medically approved body analyser used in some, but not all East riding libraries, to provide free health and well-being assessments for library members. It offers a full body composition scan that include includes measurements of bone mass, visceral fat, water content, metabolic rate and metabolic age. Members can track their results using the free body tracks app which I now have on my phone, which provides insights into their health and fitness."
The initiative is intended to be more than just a quick check-up, acting as a gateway for residents to take charge of their fitness over a sustained period.
Councillor Phoenix added:
"The service is designed to help users understand their health status and set personal health goals. An appointment can be booked which includes a healthy chat consultation, and the results of the Boditrax scan explained to you. You are given the opportunity to come back for a further consultation over 12 weeks to review your personal progress. This can easily be reached by visiting eastridinglibraries.co.uk and book at either Beverley, Bridlington Central, Bridlington North, Goole, or Withernsea libraries."
Councillor Nick Coultish has also supported the plan to promote the health scanners.
He highlighted the extensive rollout of the technology across the region and the significant uptake from the public over the past few years:
"We actually have them at nine leisure centres, eight libraries and three mobile units that that travel around the county visiting various different events and public events and that anybody can request to use as well and since 2019 our teams have undertaken more than 186,000 scans with local residents, so it's more than just about collecting data. A BodiTrax appointment is often just the start of a wider health journey and residents are supported into gym memberships through through that appointment, health referral programs, community activities and library groups which can all benefit their health and well-being."
The preventive nature of the scheme is seen as a crucial tool in managing community health, particularly for those who may not realise they are at risk of future medical issues.
Councillor Nick Coultish stated:
"we know that around 90 percent of people who engage in these programs show health improvements, helping individuals live healthier lives while reducing pressure on the NHS and social care. So, the data tells us why this work matters with more than more more than half of residents scanned are assessed as being only average health and would benefit therefore from preventative intervention where the space allows, the Mayor should help us expand that and help secure investment in more mobile and fixed units across the strain. So, this would enable us to reach more residents, particularly those in rural communities who face barriers such as transport difficulties, digital exclusion or limited awareness of available support."
