The candidates standing for East Riding Council seats in this year’s local elections have been announced as almost a quarter of serving councillors prepare to stand down.
Voters are set to go to the polls in the East Riding on Thursday, May 4, in the first all-out council elections since 2019.
A total of 227 candidates are vying for one of the 67 seats up for grabs in County Hall.
The Liberal Democrat opposition on East Riding Council and Labour, which currently has no seats, are fielding candidates in every ward while the Conservatives are standing in all but one.
The Conservatives currently control the council and have 42 seats, to the Liberal Democrats’ 13, along with the seven-strong Independent group, three non-aligned members and two Yorkshire Party councillors.
The Conservatives have controlled the council since 2007 with no party having overall control from the authority’s creation in 1996 until the current ruling group took over.
The Conservatives will be looking to retain control of the authority, regain ones lost to the Liberal Democrats in recent by elections while making inroads elsewhere.
The Liberal Democrats meanwhile will have their sights set on building on their by election hat trick over the last year to strengthen their position or take power all together.
Labour will also be looking to take seats and get representation on the council for the first time since 2019 when it lost all its six seats.
Other parties standing for election include the Yorkshire Party, the Greens, the far-left Trade Union and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) and the right-wing successors to the Brexit Party, Reform UK.
Every East Riding ward except Howden elects up to three councillors, with the candidates with the most votes taking the seats even if they are from the same political party.
The elections are also set to see the departure of 16 serving councillors, most of them Conservatives.
They include current Conservatives Economy Portfolio Holder Cllr Jane Evison, of East Wolds and Coastal ward.
Former Conservative cabinet members South Hunsley’s Cllr Julie Abraham and Cllr Shaun Horton, of Willerby and Kirk Ella, will also not contest the election.
Liberal Democrat Cllr Phil Davison, of Hessle, is also set to stand down along with Cottingham North’s two independents, Cllr Ros Jump and Cllr Geraldine Mathieson.
