East Riding Council is celebrating its success as one of the top recycling authorities in the UK.
The council says that last year, an impressive 60.4% of household waste was reused, recycled, or composted.
Councillor Anne Handley, leader of the council, expressed her pride in the achievement:
East Riding Council says its achievements are not only environmentally beneficial but also financially sound. The disposal cost per household is just £51, significantly lower than the national average.
The council leader says that recent initiatives, such as the blue bin tagging campaign, have been instrumental in this success. This campaign has successfully reduced contamination rates from 19% to under 14%, placing East Riding amongst the best in the country.
Councillor Handley further emphasised the importance of resident participation:
The council says its commitment to providing accessible recycling options is evident in its network of household waste recycling sites. These sites boast an impressive 83% refuge and recycling rate. They also feature innovative additions like vape and coffee pod recycling banks. The council says it is dedicated to expanding opportunities for residents to contribute to a greener future.
