A specialist Dog Theft Inspector has been appointed at North Yorkshire Police.
The county's Police and Crime Commissioner has instigated the move as part of a drive to improve the way the force deals with pet thefts.
Phillip Allot says currently Dog thefts are treated as property thefts meaning they are dealt with in the same way as the theft of a mobile phone.
He's hoping for a change in the regulations around that in the Autumn.
The commissioner says the way dog thefts are handled by the police and the courts needs to change,Phillip Allot says it's great that the North Yorkshire force now has a specialist Dog Theft Inspector but he also wants the rules around pet theft to be changed.
