A Scarborough family had a lucky escape during the early hours of Friday morning, after a candle, which had been left burning in a bedroom whilst they slept, set fire to the floor.
Some quick thinking by the family dog woke up the occupants before one threw a washing up bowl of water over the fire.
Crews from Scarborough Fire stations were deployed but the fire was extinguished before their arrival.
The fire service say:
"One male was given treatment for smoke inhalation by Ambulance. We will return to carry out a safe and well assessment and fit smoke alarms as none present in property, with the family fortunately woken up by the family dog.
Candles can play an important part in religious festivals but they can be extremely dangerous in the home, if not used properly.
If you burn candles at home, for whatever reason, please remember:
- Never leaving a burning candle unattended
- Never leave a candle burning when you’re asleep or away from the property
- Never burn a candle near soft furnishings or on a soft or uneven surface
- Never burn a candle where it could be knocked over or touched by pets or children"
