A link bridge and plant room are scheduled for demolition and removal at Scarborough Hospital.
The demolition of a link bridge connecting the now defunct pathology building to the northern wing of Scarborough Hospital has been approved by North Yorkshire Council.
The scheme will include the removal and replacement of the existing theatre plant rooms, which contain electrical and gas systems, alongside the removal of an existing stair core and installation of a replacement.
The hospital site was originally established in the 1930s with a significant expansion taking place in the 1980s, while a new state-of-the-art Urgent and Emergency Care Centre was opened earlier this year.
Due to the “piecemeal and bespoke nature” of the site’s development, some of the original art deco buildings have been lost and those that remain are sited among modern extensions.
Planners said that the site would be enhanced following the removal of the link bridge.
No comments were received from Scarborough Town Council and no representations were submitted by members of the public.
The scheme includes the construction of a new plant room containing “associated equipment” following the removal of the existing plant room which is located on the roof of the theatre building.
Currently, the plant room contains air handling units for an operating theatre and the maternity block, an anaesthetic gas scavenging system, electrical distribution boards, and a water heater.
Officers stated that the structure would be noticeable in the “immediacy of this section of the site given its ‘top-heavy’ appearance”.
However, they note that it is “located to the rear of the main hospital building, which is taller, amongst other developments and therefore, is not widely visible within the public domain”.
The existing theatre block at Scarborough Hospital requires upgrading and refurbishment and a former theatre room will also be reinstated following the conversion of a space currently utilised for storage.
North Yorkshire Council approved the application, subject to conditions, on Wednesday, November 26.
