Day of Defeats for Yorkshire Coast Cricketers

Scarborough, Bridlington, Whitby and Folkton & Flixton's cricketers all suffered defeats on Saturday.

Scarborough had been in good form going into their clash with Sheriff Hutton Bridge at North Marine Road on Saturday.

Bridge batted first and put on 85 for the first wicket but then lost two wickets in quick succession. They rebuilt to 125 for 2 but again suffered a collapse, to end up 127 for 5.

Useful lower order runs took the visitors to a challenging 235/9 from their 50 overs. Once again, all rounder Breidyn Schaper took wickets with 3 for 45 and Adam Newington picked up 4/38.

Schaper was needed with the bat too as his side struggled to 45/2 and 99/4. The youngster anchored the innings with a superb 113 not out, but none of his team-mates were able to muster more than 21. Schaper's efforts meant the hosts went until the final over with a chance, but they ended up 10 runs short, scoring 225/7 from their 50 overs.

Scarborough do have a quickfire chance of bouncing back when they host Beverley on Sunday, again in the YPN Premier Division.

In the YPN Championship, Bridlington fielded first against York Seconds. Casey Rudd and Steve Janney took three wickets peace and there were two each for Nathan Johnson and Elliot Traves. York lost regular wickets but still managed to post 231 after being bowled out for the penultimate ball in their allotted 50 overs.

Brid struggled to 61/4 and 97/5 in response. Wicket-keeper Sam Wragg made 36 with Johnson adding 48 and at 139/5, the visitors were right in the game. However, they fell to 157/8 and only a swashbuckling 45 not out from 38 balls from skipper Ricky Robinson kept them afloat. Brid were finally bowled out nine runs short with four balls remaining.

Folkton & Flixton hosted Stamford Bridge in the same division.

Bridge chose to bat and it looked a pretty good call as they made 232/9 from 50 overs. The hosts did well to peg Bridge back from 100/2 to 107/5.

Harry Walmsley took 3/47, with two wickets each for Charlie Colley and Jadon Wilson.

In response, the hosts were going well at 76/1, but they quickly slipped to 113/6. Will Hutchinson made an impressive 55 at the top of the innings and Jake Hatton added 33 but it wasn't enough as Folkton & Flixton had to just survive their 50 overs, finishing nearly 50 runs short but at least avoiding being bowled out.

Whitby are still waiting for their first league win of the season after losing out again in the North Yorkshire South Durham First Division.

Skipper Kai Morris won the toss and chose to bat first but despite Andy Wood's 28, the visitors looked to be struggling with the bat again at 57/5. Enter Paul Buck and Matthew Steyert. The pair put on a century stand with Buck adding 46 and his junior team-mate a stunning 76 from 74 balls. It meant Whitby rescued their innings and posted a useful 222, though they would've been disappointed to have more than three overs remaining.

Whitby restricted opponents Richmondshire Seconds well early on as the hosts slipped to 46/3. Steve Allen took three wickets and there was one each for Steyert and Matty Towey. However the dismissals came at a price as the home side scored at a pace and lower order runs meant they reached their target with four wickets and more than 12 overs.

Whitby remain second from bottom in the league table.
