A new vaccination centre has opened at Scarborough Rugby Club today.
85,000 people from eight GP Practices in Scarborough and Filey will be able to access COVID vaccinations from the new site at Silver Royd over the coming weeks and months.
The team running the centre say they expect to vaccinate 1,100 people today and expect to be able to increase that daily number as they move forwards.
Vicky Matson is the practise manager at Scarborough Medical group, she says the first few hours have gone well
Vicky says the centre will be open as often as the vaccine supply allows.
The tight turn around on the vaccine supply means that patients are being notified just a few days ahead of potential vaccination dates. Vicky says some people being vaccinated today were only contacted yesterday.
"Some patients will have only been rung yesterday to come today or tomorrow, so it is a really fast turn around. As soon as we know the delivery dates for the vaccines we work out what staff we have available, which volunteers we have available to help and then we start contacting patients, so yes it's really fast, we don't even have time to send letters out to patients."
"We are finding patients are responding really well and the take up is huge, we are finding that patients just want the vaccine and as soon as they are offered a vaccine they are happy to come"
The centre is being supported by the admin teams from the eight surgeries involved in the project. They are co-ordinating appointments and contacting patients.
Jenny Loggie, PCN development manager for Filey and Scarborough Healthcare Communities Network.says
"We're asking patients to be patient, they will get the call, it's very important that they don't clog the surgery phone lines enquiring about the vaccinations as we need the lines free for other routine services that we are still offering. "
Vicky says the support from the volunteers has been instrumental in getting the new vaccine centre up and running.
Two Primary Care Networks (PCNs) will use the new site to vaccinate eligible patients. Patients who already have appointments to attend the surgery sites should attend the surgeries, as planned.
The eight GP Practices involved in the project are from two Primary Care Networks – Scarborough Core PCN and Filey and Scarborough Healthier Communities Network PCN

- Brook Square Surgery
- Castle Health Centre
- Eastfield Medical Centre
