CU Scarborough and the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have stressed the significance of new accommodation at the former Argos site on Newborough, in Scarborough.
For the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the new accommodation will help it attract staff for positions which are challenging to fill and help to deliver the best possible healthcare to the community. For CU Scarborough the development will help its continued growth in Scarborough and attract students from out of the area
The first graduates with a nursing degree from CU Scarborough have also started work for local NHS Trusts. CU Scarborough’s Adult Nursing BSc degree was introduced three years ago to help tackle a shortage of nurses in the area.
Now 17 members of the first cohort have started in a variety of roles across York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. The rest of the 21 students will go on to join the NHS in different areas of the country.
The plans for a mixed-use new accommodation development have been proposed by Wrenbridge and Buccleuch Property, working in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council, and includes new retail units on the ground floor and accommodation for 50 doctors and nurses from Scarborough Hospital and 150 university students on the upper floors.
A spokesperson for Wrenbridge and Buccleuch Property commented:
“These plans are very important to both CU Scarborough and the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as well as regenerating a key part of the City Centre, with deliverable and positive plans.
“If approved, the planning application will herald a major investment in Scarborough and provide much needed student and keyworker accommodation.”
Polly McMeekin, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“The new accommodation will play a major role in helping us to recruit staff to positions that are challenging to fill, by providing high-quality purpose built accommodation in a sustainable location. The new development will also help attract medical staff from further afield and out of the Scarborough area. Approving these plans will help us to deliver the best possible healthcare to the people of Scarborough.”
CU Scarborough Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor Jackie Mathers said:
"We opened CU Scarborough (part of Coventry University Group) in 2015 with a clear intent to help Scarborough in its ambitions to regenerate and create a sustainable economy.
"When we started, we had less than 30 students and now we are delighted to have around 1,000 students, 80 per cent of whom are from the local area and are filling local positions on graduation.
"We remain committed to that vision of sustainable education, and we want to further support the town by encouraging young people from outside North Yorkshire to come to Scarborough to study and play a role in the local community and economy.
"More high-quality accommodation is essential in the next phase of that development as we aim to help increase the talent pool and skills in the area – focusing on the local needs of health and policing and helping to develop the area into the UK's cyber hub."
