Crabs, Shrimps and Seaweed Feature in a New Interactive Audio Tour of the Yorkshire Coast

GPS triggered sound walks have been created in Scarborough and Whitby.

Sea Songs is a sound art project inspired by North Yorkshire's marine heritage and wildlife and takes the form of two audio walks - one in Scarborough and one in Whitby.

Walkers can download the Echoes app onto their smartphone and search for 'Sea Songs Soundwalk Scarborough’ or ‘Sea Songs Soundwalk Whitby’ for a short GPS triggered sound walk taking in locations around the coast where participants can listen to audio works relating to the marine environment.

The sounds will be specific to each location on the walk. The Audio seascapes have been created by students from Scarborough Sixth Form alongside sound artist Rob Mackay.

The works were created using special underwater microphones which captured the sounds of marine mammals and their underwater environment.

Alice Sharp from Invisible Dust, who commissioned the Wild Eye Arts project, says the students have captured some unusual sounds.

Alice says the students took to the water to collect some of the audio.

Alice Sharp says the team recorded sounds of Dolphins, seals and seaweed but also some less natural noises.
