Trading Standards officers have seized a range of fake and potentially dangerous products, including chemically hazardous children's toys, during a targeted crackdown at a Bridlington car boot sale.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Trading Standards team has carried out a successful enforcement operation resulting in the seizure of a wide range of counterfeit and unsafe goods in Bridlington.
The targeted enforcement action took place on Thursday the 2nd of July at the popular Strawberry Fields car boot sale. During the visit, investigating officers successfully identified and removed a variety of products that posed potential health and safety risks to consumers.
During the operation, officials discovered imitation branded goods and counterfeit toys which failed to meet stringent safety regulations.
At one particular stall, Trading Standards officers seized a number of unsafe and counterfeit children's items. The confiscated goods included Needoh products, Labubu Dolls, and Squeezy Dumplings.
According to the council, some of the Squeezy Dumplings seized at the market were already subject to a national product recall after being identified as presenting a serious chemical risk. Authorities issued a stark warning that the recalled products contained hazardous substances which could pose a significant danger to children, and stressed that they should not be sold or supplied to consumers under any circumstances.
During the very same operation, officers also targeted a second trader, seizing a range of suspected counterfeit goods. The items confiscated from this particular stall included imitation high-end perfumes alongside counterfeit Apple-branded electronic products.
The recent operation has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the illicit sale of unsafe and fake merchandise at local markets, with a particular focus on the severe risks associated with toys and children's products.
East Riding Trading Standards officers have confirmed their intention to carry out further robust inspections at car boot sales, markets, and other retail outlets across the East Riding. The team aims to continually identify and remove unsafe products from sale, ensuring that local consumers remain protected from hazardous goods.
Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection, said:
"Consumers have a right to expect that the products they buy are safe and genuine. Counterfeit and unsafe goods can present significant risks, particularly when they are aimed at children.
We will continue to work proactively to identify and remove these products from sale and take appropriate action against those responsible."
Following the seizures at Strawberry Fields, residents are being actively reminded to exercise extreme caution when purchasing goods from markets, car boot sales, and various online platforms.
Trading Standards officials advise that consumers should be particularly wary of products being sold at unusually low prices, items that are presented in poor packaging, and goods that fail to display the appropriate safety information.
Anyone who holds information about the sale of counterfeit or unsafe products is strongly encouraged to report their concerns to Trading Standards. This can be done confidentially through the Citizens Advice consumer service by calling their dedicated helpline on 0808 223 1133, or by visiting the official Citizens Advice website.
