A senior North Yorkshire councillor has said that there are ‘positive signs’ regarding Scarborough Athletic's pitch.
North Yorkshire Council had been planning to replace the 3G playing surface at Scarborough Sports Village with an upgraded version over the summer break between football seasons, but when initial surveys were carried out serious structural issues were discovered with the playing surface which could take over 40 weeks and £3m to fix.
This has left scarborough Athletic in the situation where they are now without a home ground for most of next season. The club has announced it's intention to work with Bridlington Town on a ground share arrangement at the club's Mounting Systems stadium on Queensgate.
The Scarborough sports Village is owned and maintained by North Yorkshire Council, which has previously stated it's commitment to fix the problems and says it has been in discussions with the contractors who built the pitch eight years ago.
Speaking at a full meeting of the authority on Wednesday, May 21, Councillor Simon Myers gave a brief update on the situation:
"The Situation as regards Scarborough Athletic Football Club and the football pitch at the Sports Village in Scarborough.
I don't say too much about it's safe for the fact that, there are positive signs.
I'm very grateful to the officers and the contractors who've been doing a lot of work together.
It's looking positive."
In an update from the club’s board of directors earlier this month, SAFC said:
“Over the last few weeks, the club has been working hard to secure a temporary venue to host ‘home’ games which will ensure we are able to continue operating in the National League.
“As previously announced work is now ongoing to prepare the Mounting Systems Stadium at Bridlington for Step 2 compliance and to prepare a groundshare agreement which will be subject to the approval of both the National League and Northern Premier League.”
