Community Response Funding Proposals for Bridlington and Hornsea

Projects in Bridlington and Hornsea could benefit from a new round of funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner.

East Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) - Jonathan Evison - has announced a third round of funding from his Community Response Fund, targeting crime and community safety at a local level by directly responding to issues identified by the public that are affecting their neighbourhoods and local areas.

The PCC’s Community Response Fund (CRF) is a project which responds directly to the issues that the public have identified via Humber Talking, the engagement tool used by the PCC and Humberside Police which asks residents key questions about the issues that affect their community, for example, road safety, criminal damage, drug dealing and antisocial behaviour.

Following successful pilot rounds earlier this year, Round 3 of the fund will focus on seven specific local areas, providing funding for projects that seek to address a key issue identified by residents that is impacting on their neighbourhoods. For Bridlington South, this investment is also linked to the Clear, Hold, Build initiative.

The Fund will provide up to £10,000 in each area to fund a project to address Antisocial Behaviour:

  • Barton Upon Humber, North Lincolnshire
  • Crowle, North Lincolnshire
  • Kirton in Lindsey, North Lincolnshire
  • Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire

The fund will also aid the reduction in Antisocial Behaviour through an investment of up to £17,500 in two projects that support the delivery of the Clear, Hold, Build initiative in Bridlington South.

In Bridlington it is proposed that the funding is used to support the Wild West Hill 2, Rewilding Youth project which proposes to facilitate transformative nature connection activities, wild adventures, wild therapy and local environmental activism opportunities for young people living on and around the West Hill Housing Estate in Bridlington.

The project proposal says it will:

"focus especially on those young people who would not usually be involved in nature-based/environmentally focused activities and whose areas have been identified to us as hotspots for anti-social and criminal behaviour in Bridlington as highlighted through participation in the recent Clear, Hold, Build conferences and events.

The project aim to engage and work with communities of young people through delivering a series of weekly 3 hour sessions delivered by qualified and experienced youth workers and outdoor education practitioners. Rewilding Youth uses nature connection activities such as bushcraft, green woodwork, foraging and environmental education to provide inspiring, motivating and sometimes challenging experiences for young people through which develop their self-confidence; self-knowledge and self-esteem.  Examples of activities that we deliver include:

  • Bushcraft
  • Campfire cooking
  • Wild Walks/Wild Camps
  • Animal tracking
  • Wild therapy
  • Shelter-building
  • Foraging
  • Willow-weaving
  • Green woodwork"

The  Bridlington fund would also support After School and Holiday Clubs at The Hinge.

The Hinge say they have identified children living in Bridlington who are marginalised, isolated and vulnerable due to extreme deprivation and poverty. They say the children:

"suffer multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences resulting in poor emotional wellbeing and struggle to form trusting relationships/friendships and are not engaging in school or local activities.

They are living in insecure, inadequate/unsafe housing or at risk of being homeless. They have chaotic lifestyles and poor lifestyle choices. A lot of residents are benefit dependent and/or single-parent families. Most of the children are reliant on free school meals and foodbanks."

The Hinge project will provide a wide range of activities after-school and in the school holidays. They will run clubs daily during term-time at their centre on Havenfield Estate and the new centre next to the Town Hall. In the school holidays they will offer longer sessions and activities at the centre and also organise family excursions and trips to provide structure and routine and to continue informal education to further support their engagement at school.

The public are being asked to show their support for the Bridlington projects by voting for them at https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7708643/Community-Response-Fund-Proposed-Projects-in-Bridlington-South

In Hornsea antisocial behaviour remains a specific area of concern highlighted via Humber Talking data.  The Neighbourhood Policing Team are undertaking preventative patrols and working with other agencies and local providers to address issues reported including:

  • youths on motorcycles causing a nuisance on Rolston Road and Cliff Road
  • youths setting fires at Hall Garth Park, Longbeach Caravan Site and near the pumping station on the sea front
  • the conduct of street drinkers particularly around the Greenway estate in Hornsea.  Individuals have had alcohol seized (no drinking zone), cannabis seized and been reported for urinating in the street.

The funding would be used by Hornsea Town Council to expand the work of their three Youth Response Workers, in consultation with other services and partners, to continue to engage with targeted and vulnerable young people in a positive way, out in the community at locations where they hangout, and continue to engage with them in meaningful discussion, support them to reduce ASB and provide informal education to prevent and reduce risk taking behaviours.

The project will provide some meaningful diversionary activities, signpost young people to specialist services and encourage them to design projects that will grow their skills to reduce anti-social behaviour and other related issues involving young people in Hornsea.

Residents who wish to show support for the Hornsea project can vote at https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7708636/Community-Response-Fund-Proposed-Project-in-Hornsea
