Whitby's Coastguard Rescue team were called out just after 16:00 yesterday in response to 999 calls expressing concern for a number of people who appeared to have become cut off by the tide to the East of Whitby.
Once on scene, Coastguard Rescue Officers located two people who had become cut off under the East Cliff approximately 650 meters to the East of East Pier. Coastguards accessed the area along the shoreline and made an assessment of the situation.
The team confirmed that there was nobody else cut off by the tide and decided that the best method of extraction from this particular location was for Coastguards to assist the casualties along the shoreline back to the East Pier. Humber Coastguard requested the RNLI ILB was brought to immediate readiness should a waterborne asset be required. Once back at the East Pier, Coastguards confirmed that no further assistance was required and some safety advice was given regarding tide times.
The Coastguard say :
"Please ensure that you are well prepared for whatever activity you intend to undertake at the Coast. In particular remember to check tide times before you set out and ensure that you allow enough time to make it back to safety.
If you see anyone in trouble at sea or on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
