The East Riding of Yorkshire is taking part in a pilot project looking at how to live with coastal erosion.
The project will see government funding used to look at innovative approaches to support vulnerable coastal communities.
The county will get £1.4m to develop a business case.
Bridlington councillor - Chris Matthews - says that could lead to more money being released to deliver a range of projects.
The East Riding of Yorkshire has one of the fastest eroding coastlines in Europe. The 85km stretch of coast which runs from Flamborough Head in the north to Spurn Point in the south is retreating by up to 4m a year on average.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council and North Norfolk District Council have been selected to deliver the pilot project in recognition of these areas having the highest rates of erosion in England, along with 84% of the total number of residential properties at risk from coastal erosion in England over the next 20 years.
The initial £1.4m of government cash will be used to create a business case which could unlock a further 1£14m of funding for a range of projects.
Bridlington Councillor - Chris Matthews - says it's an important project for the area.
In accordance with the funding agreement, by the end of 2022-2023, the council must now provide a report to Defra which describes progress in development of the outline business case, including its readiness and proposed spend against activities such as the procurement of consultants;
staffing; studies completed to build the evidence base; community and stakeholder engagement activities; technical and economic assessments; and practical actions.
