Camping Fundraiser for Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind

A Scarborough Church group are planning to camp out in the Lake District next weekend to raise funds for Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind.

Scarborough Unitarians are running the camping weekend in the peak district to raise funds towards all the good work they do in Scarborough and the surrounding area.

The "Camp Out to Help Out" initiative represents a unique blend of adventure and altruism, offering an innovative approach to supporting communities while embracing the great outdoors. This movement encourages individuals and groups to organize camping events, where participation fees or donations are directly contributed to local causes, charities, or community projects. It’s billed as "an opportunity for people to disconnect from the digital world, reconnect with nature, and simultaneously make a positive impact on the lives of others."

The event will be taking place at Flagg Barn from Friday to Monday.

Andrew Parkinson from Scarborough Unitarian Church added:

"At the heart of "Camp Out to Help Out" is the idea that camping can be more than just a personal or recreational activity; it can be a vehicle for change. Participants not only enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of nature but also foster a sense of community and shared purpose.

This year we are raising funds for Scarborough Mind, to help support those with mental health difficulties in the local area. The initiative demonstrates how outdoor activities can be harnessed for social good.

Moreover, "Camp Out to Help Out" serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship. It encourages campers to practice leave-no-trace principles, promoting sustainability and the protection of natural habitats.

This aspect of the initiative educates participants on the importance of conserving the environment for future generations, making it a comprehensive approach to community service, environmental conservation, and outdoor education.

By participating in or organizing a "Camp Out to Help Out" event, individuals can enjoy the inherent benefits of camping while contributing to meaningful causes, truly embodying the spirit of giving back through adventure."

Andrew says:

"We still have a number of places left if anyone would like to join us.

Our aim is for each person attending to raise £200 in sponsorship to help reach our target of £10,000!

This would help fund a part-time councillor for a year!"
