A Filey councillor has called for an increase in temporary public toilets on Royal Parade, describing the current provision as inadequate following the closure of the permanent facilities.
A Filey councillor has called for more temporary public toilets to be installed on Royal Parade, describing the current provision as inadequate for the number of visitors.
The permanent public conveniences on Royal Parade in Filey were closed and fenced off in February after structural engineers found the building's condition had significantly worsened in recent months.
The deterioration of the seaside site was accelerated by structural defects, age, weathering, and a period of sustained heavy rainfall, which also forced an adjacent café to close for safety reasons.
North Yorkshire Council previously announced that swift action was being taken to ensure essential facilities were in place for the traditional tourism season, with five temporary toilets planned for the Filey site by the end of March.
However, Councillor Sam Cross says that only four units have actually been put in place to replace the closed permanent block, which previously housed more than twenty toilets.
Councillor Sam Cross said:
"We have the Royal parade toilets in Filey, where we had over 20 toilets.
Since the the toilets are now and the cafe are falling down, we only have had four toilets put there, which is woefully inadequate for the number of visitors. And I just wondered if I could look into getting some extra toilets there."
The closure of the Royal Parade facilities was followed less than a fortnight later by the closure of Building No1 on Scarborough's West Pier, where engineers identified potential structural issues, forcing the ground floor toilets to shut and tenants to move out.
To address the closures across the Yorkshire Coast, North Yorkshire Council secured a total of twenty temporary toilets, allocating fifteen for Scarborough's West Pier car park and the remainder for Filey.
North Yorkshire Council's leader, Councillor Carl Les, previously stated that the local authority fully understood and appreciated the frustration caused by the lack of toilet facilities in Filey and Scarborough.
He noted that the council was left with no alternative but to close the facilities due to safety concerns and acknowledged that the temporary provision was a reduction on the number of permanent toilets.
Councillor Les added that the council had faced a number of challenges in securing temporary provision but would continue to explore options to increase the number of temporary toilets in both towns.
Gary Fielding, North Yorkshire Council's corporate director of resources, previously explained that the council inherited the Filey site from the former borough council after years of underinvestment.
He stated that work had already started on how the site could be redeveloped before its condition recently worsened, adding that the building's structure posed significant health and safety risks and could not remain open.
Councillor Richard Foster, the Executive Member for Managing our Environment, confirmed that the situation regarding the temporary facilities in Filey is currently being looked at, though he noted that vandalism has added to the ongoing difficulties.
Councillor Richard Foster said:
"It's a well known problem with the Royal Parade toilets, in Filey, they are out of commission.
We continue to work, we get weekly updates on where we are and we are looking at the amount of toilets there, but it the they have been vandalized and stuff like that as usual.
So it's it's a difficult issue, but we're keeping working on it."
Longer-term proposals to redevelop and refurbish the Royal Parade site in Filey are continuing to be progressed by North Yorkshire Council.
These proposals include the consideration of installing new permanent toilet facilities and retail units, as well as exploring ways to make the area more aesthetically appealing for users.
In the meantime, the council has advised that a number of alternative toilet facilities remain open in the area for visitors to use.
Further work is also being carried out in Scarborough to inform the extent of the repairs required at West Pier and to establish how long it will take to reinstate permanent facilities at that location.
