Whitby Town Council is to investigate what steps can be taken to ensure future new housing in the town is made available to local people.
The move comes after councillors opposed the addition of eleven parcels of land to the towns local plan.
That's a document that sets out where housing might be built in the future.
Councillor Glenn Goodbury says the if more houses are to be built something needs to be done to ensure locals get a look in.
Councillors on the town's planning committee expressed fears that too many houses would be built and too much green space would be lost.
Now councillors are also investigating what could be done to make sure any new houses that are built are made available to local people.
Councillor Noreen Wilson says there are measures that can be taken and other local authorities have been able to introduce restrictions.
Whitby Town Council will now be talking to the legal service department at the Borough Council to establish what, if anything, can be done to enforce the sale of properties to local families and to reduce the number of second homes and holiday lets in the town.
