Councillors in East Yorkshire are to be asked to back a referendum on devolution for Yorkshire.
Acting leader of the Yorkshire Party, Tim Norman is tabling an amendment at tomorrow's county council meeting, asking the authority to call on the government to consult the public on giving Yorkshire similar status to Scotland and Wales.
Councillors are due to be discussing a motion highlighting the East Ridings ongoing discussions with Hull to create a mayoral combined authority.
But Councillor Tim Norman says that doesn't go far enough.
The original Motion being proposed at ERYC Full Council on Wednesday 7th October by Council Leader Richard Burton states:
“That this Council in line with the present Government’s forward funding strategy;
1. Acknowledges the importance of the ongoing discussions between East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council regarding the implications of devolution and the possibility of forming a mayoral combined authority for key strategic economic development, infrastructure and skills investment, and that residents of the East Riding will be invited to participate in a formal consultation process when their views will be considered, and
2. Recognises the importance to residents for the East Riding to retain its own separate identity and governance and for decisions on all other priority services and relating to council tax and expenditure to remain local."
Cllr Normans’ proposed amendment adds a third paragraph:
“3. This Council, in order to ensure that the will of the people of Yorkshire as a whole is followed, calls on the Government to hold a referendum on the formation of a Regional Parliament for Yorkshire, with the powers similar to Scotland and Wales to impact meaningfully on people’s lives. Furthermore, for the most localised issues, that powers are devolved to the Town and Parish Councils.”
