The easing of the COVID restrictions over the summer lead to a bigger than expected bounce back for tourism in the Scarborough Borough and means car park fees in the borough won't increase next year.
Figures produced by the borough council show a larger than expected increase in a number of the metrics it tracks.
The councils performance officer, Sonya Daines, says an increase in visitors to the borough bought a number of benefits.
The increase in the number of visitors to the borough over the summer months has had a knock on effect on the councils finances.
Scarborough Borough Council has published is list of fees for the coming year, there are increases to various mooring fees along the coast, chalet hire prices and licence fees for animal day care providers.
But many fees remain unchanged including car parking fees in the borough, Councillor Janet Jefferson says an increase in demand for the boroughs car parks means a fee increase is not required.
In recent years the Council’s Financial Strategy has included 2% uplifts in income budgets across their range of services. In 2021/22 fees and charges were predominantly frozen as the Council and its customers faced the economic pressures of the pandemic.
The Interim budget report presented to Cabinet in November detailed a proposed 3% uplift in income budgets for 2022/23 to reflect the
Consumer Price Index (CPI) rates as at September 2021. This uplift equates to an overall increase in income for the council of £392k.
This doesn't mean that all fees have to increase by 3% though as the increases can be delivered in other ways, in the case of car parks it is expected that an increase in the number of vehicles using the car parks will provide the 3% increase in income.
Here are the changes to the councils fees for the next financial year.
