Mike Thompson’s Bridlington Town play their 2nd away game of the season, as they make the journey up north to Shildon.
The visitors go into the game in mixed form, having been knocked out of the FA Cup to Dunston last Saturday, though they managed a draw against Worksop Town last time out. Considering the quality of players Worksop had at their disposal, with a plethora of lads who had played at higher levels including the Football League and internationally, it proved to be a great point. Despite their slight inconsistency, they still sit 5th in the league early into the season.
Central defender Harry Webster will be back available for Bridlington, and Thompson has also admitted he is looking at bringing a new player or two to cover for player unavailability. A factor of this is the suspension of Jack Griffin, who will still be out for Saturday’s fixture.
Shildon will have to watch out for silky winger Ali Aydemir, who netted the equaliser in the Worksop outing, casually going round the keeper to slot the ball home. The goal was Aydemir’s 4th of the season in as many games, putting him joint top of the league’s goalscoring chart.
As for the hosts, their league season couldn’t have started much worse. They are 19th, having lost both their opening games to Grantham Town and Dunston respectively. As a result, they are one of only two teams yet to pick up a point this season, the other of which is Grimsby Borough, Bridlington’s next opponents after the Shildon game.
Shildon did, however, progress in the Preliminary round of the FA Cup. They drew 1-1 away against Newcastle Benfield of the league below, before winning the replay 4-2 on home turf. 26-year old forward Michael Sweet netted his first two goals in the replay, making him Shildon’s top scorer so far.
Bridlington’s first victory last season came against Shildon, as Lewis Dennison’s 89th minute winner ensured the game finished 2-1, following a penalty goal each way earlier in the game. In the reverse fixture, Shildon sent Bridlington home with no points, as they won the game 2-0, with Sweet and Dean Thexton on the scoresheet.
