Bridlington Town overcame higher-tier local rivals Scarborough Athletic on penalties following a thrilling two-all draw to win the David Holland Memorial Trophy.
Bridlington Town produced a magnificent, gritty display to claim the David Holland Memorial Trophy, overcoming National League North opponents Scarborough Athletic on penalties after an entertaining two-all draw.
The performance highlighted just how far the Seasiders have progressed since January, matching their higher-tier rivals in a highly physical, fiercely contested local derby at the HDM Energies Stadium.
Bridlington manager Scott Kerr was jubilant after the final whistle, praising his squad’s display. He suggested that his side looked the better of the two teams throughout the afternoon.
The match got off to an even and energetic start. Bridlington created the first major opening in the eighth minute when Alex Markham sprayed a brilliant switch over the top to Ahmed Salam, who dribbled expertly into the box and flashed a low cross that unfortunately evaded everyone.
Scarborough responded with a threat of their own in the seventeenth minute, winning a free kick on the edge of the area after a heavy challenge from a Bridlington trialist, which went on to clip the far post.
The Seasiders went close again in the twenty-seventh minute when a deep free kick from Salam found Tom Allan, whose header beat Boro keeper Ryan Whitley but drifted agonisingly past the upright.
The game burst into life around the half-hour mark. A loose back-pass in the Bridlington defence was pounced on by Harry Green, who was subsequently tripped inside the box to earn Scarborough a penalty.
Lewis Maloney stepped up in the thirty-first minute and converted from the spot. Despite the Bridlington keeper getting a strong hand to the ball, he could not keep it out, putting the visitors one-nil up.
Bridlington reacted with immediate aggression and had strong appeals for a penalty of their own turned down just three minutes later when Billy Marshall went down under a heavy challenge in the area.
Undeterred, the Seasiders found their equaliser in the thirty-eighth minute. A sharp, low ball was played through the box to the back post, where Marshall was waiting to tap home against his former club, ensuring the sides went into the half-time break locked at one-all.
Bridlington came out with renewed intent in the second half, showing real attacking ambition. Early in the second period, another dangerous corner from Salam found Allan, who rose above Scarborough's Will Thornton but could only direct his header wide of the target.
The Seasiders’ pressure paid off in the sixtieth minute. A precise corner from Salam caused chaos in the Boro box, forcing a weak flap from the visitors' trialist goalkeeper. Casey Stewart was alert to the loose ball, nodding it back into the danger area where Toby Marriott rose highest to head Bridlington into a two-one lead.
Just moments later, Marriott was involved again, holding up a direct ball and turning his marker to send a teasing low cross just out of reach of the arriving Stewart and Salam.
Scarborough quickly reminded the hosts of their threat, finding an equaliser in the sixty-fourth minute. A well-weighted long ball over the top allowed Mo Fadera to showcase his blistering pace, outpacing Joe Pratley before calmly slotting the ball past the incoming Bridlington keeper to level the scoring at two-all.
Bridlington sought an immediate response, with Luca Bolino driving forward three minutes later, cutting inside, and curling a brilliant effort towards the far post that whistled just wide of the upright.
With neither side able to find a late winner, the match went straight to a dramatic penalty shootout. It was here that Bridlington’s trialist goalkeeper etched his name into the evening’s headlines, pulling off two spectacular saves to deny Scarborough’s first and third spot-kicks.
Despite Fadera sending his penalty over the bar, clinical finishes from Allan and a Bridlington trialist put the hosts in control.
The victory was sealed in spectacular fashion when Salam stepped up and audaciously chipped a panenka penalty into the back of the net, wrapping up a three-one shootout win.
