National leaders and healthcare stakeholders have gathered in Bridlington to discuss solutions to coastal health inequalities and tour the site of a planned Live Well Campus.
Leaders from across the country have gathered in Bridlington for an event dedicated to discussing the unique health challenges faced by coastal communities.
The gathering, which took place on Monday the thirteenth of July, was hosted by Lord Patel of Bradford, who serves as the chair of the Coastal Navigators Network.
The Coastal Navigators Network was established as a direct response to a significant report published in two thousand and twenty-one by Professor Sir Chris Whitty, which focused on coastal health inequalities. The findings of that report made it clear that coastal communities require specific coastal models of improvement to address their unique health and social care needs.
During the visit, stakeholders highlighted that one of the most significant barriers in many coastal places is the lack of infrastructure capable of responding to both rising levels of health need and economic exclusion.
As part of the event, visitors were taken on a tour of a specific triangle of land situated around Bridlington's Town Hall, The Medical Centre, and Crown Buildings.
While many health and community services are already delivered on that site, there is currently planning permission in place to introduce My Dentist alongside other services.
This development is aimed at transforming this part of Bridlington into a dedicated Live Well Campus.
Attendees at the event also watched a recorded message of support provided by the Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire. Following this, they participated in a comprehensive roundtable discussion.
The roundtable brought together local, regional, and national stakeholders to discuss strategies and solutions. A key focus of the conversation was how towns such as Bridlington could best be supported to achieve better outcomes for their residents.
Jason Stamp, Chair of the NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, was also noted as being among the attendees at the event.
Councillor Jonathan Owen, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Care, praised the initiative and the focus on improving local infrastructure.
Councillor Jonathan Owen said:
"This was a fantastic event to highlight the challenges that coastal communities face and discuss approaches to tackling these. The planned Live Well campus will be a key initiative to reduce inequalities in Bridlington and support better healthcare outcomes for local residents."
